MEDIA ADVISORY: SB 2258 would grant paid family leave to state employees

(BISMARCK, N.D.) – Senator Erin Oban, D-Bismarck will speak on behalf of SB 2258, a bipartisan bill requiring state employees to be paid during employer granted family leave.

“At a time when our state is growing and thriving and has such impressive records of unemployment, and when our Governor is asking for nearly 300 more state employees to come work for us, I’m wondering what we’re doing not only to recruit the best and brightest, but what we’re doing to retain those already working for us,” Oban said.

Several state employees are expected to testify in support of the bill.

“We have state employees who are saving up sick days, vacation days and whatever else they can conceivably group together in order to stay home with their newborn or take care of an ailing parent,” Oban said. “State employees, on average, make less than they could in private sector jobs. These people provide immense service to the public, and we have a chance here to put our words into action in support of our families.”

Co-sponsors of the legislation include Senators Tim Flakoll, R-Fargo; Kyle Davison, R-Fargo; Tim Mathern, D-Fargo; Representatives Jessica Haak, D-Jamestown and Josh Boschee, D-Fargo.

WHO: Senator Erin Oban, D-Bismarck
WHAT: Committee Hearing on SB 2258
WHERE: Senate Government & Veterans Affairs Committee, Missouri River Room
WHEN: Thursday, January 29th at approximately 10:30 a.m.
